300’s The Magic Number for Pete

When he stepped out on to the field to face Llanharan on Saturday (11 November), Peter Hutchings made his 300th League Appearance for Treorchy RFC.

Peter made his first team debut at the tender age of 21 on 31 August 2002 in a 31-11 defeat at Cross Keys. He went on to play 16 league matches in a tough season that had 34 league matches (yes 34!). He didn’t manage to score any tries that season but has made up for it since.

Peter reached the 100-match milestone in 2006-07 and two seasons later he became our all-time leading try scorer when he broke through the 50 try barrier. In 2011, Peter reached his 200th match and by this time had scored 77 tries. His try scoring ratio has stood the test of time and he has scored 115 tries in his 299 matches to date.

Peter’s trademark swallow dive when scoring a try is maybe not as high as it was, but it is still a sight for sore eyes for the supporters.

Peter has “almost” retired several times and has had several operations on his troublesome knees. However, rugby (and Treorchy RFC) is in his blood and he’s still not quite ready to give it all up. He seems to have had a new lease of life this season, maybe drawing energy from the younger players around him? Whatever the reason, everyone at Treorchy RFC is delighted that Peter has reached this amazing milestone and hope that we’ll be able to watch him play many more times.

Congratulations on an outstanding achievement!
